Sometimes You Need a Trip That Reminds You You Still Like Each Other

Sometimes a trip does not fix everything. But it can give two people enough space to laugh again, breathe again, and remember they still like each other. This Field Note reflects on Punta Cana, marriage, romance, and the kind of reset a couple may not realize they need.

Marriage is funny.

You can love someone deeply and still get buried under the normal parts of life — work, bills, schedules, errands, responsibilities, tired conversations, and the constant question of what needs to get done next.

Before you know it, your relationship can start to feel less like romance and more like two people managing the same small company.

And that is why sometimes a trip matters.

Not because a beach magically fixes everything.

Not because a resort solves real-life problems.

But because getting away can give two people something they may not have had in a while:

space.

Space to breathe.
Space to laugh.
Space to talk about something other than responsibilities.
Space to remember that before all the stress, routines, and adult life, there was a reason you chose each other.

Our trip to Punta Cana became one of those reminders.

We originally went to celebrate our anniversary, which sounds romantic — and it was. But let’s be honest, sometimes marriage needs that yearly reminder that, yes, you still love each other, and yes, you actually do still like each other too.

There is a difference.

Love can survive busy seasons.
But liking each other sometimes needs a little room to show back up.

A warm breeze helps.

So does good food.

So does not having to cook, clean, work, answer emails, or think about what needs to be done around the house.

During our trip, we experienced different moods of Punta Cana. Some places felt lively and energetic. Some had more of a party atmosphere. But when we ended up at Secrets, the mood felt different.

It felt slower.

More romantic.

More like the kind of place where two people could stop rushing and just be together for a while.

That is the thing about certain resorts. They are not just a place to sleep. They create a feeling. And depending on where you are in life, that feeling can matter more than the room, the pool, or even the beach.

For a couple, the right trip can become a reset.

Not a dramatic one. Not the kind where everything suddenly becomes perfect. But the kind where you sit together, look around, and think, “We needed this.”

Sometimes romance is not about some huge movie moment.

Sometimes it is sitting together with no responsibilities for a few hours.

Sometimes it is laughing about something stupid.

Sometimes it is walking around a resort at night.

Sometimes it is remembering that the person beside you is not just your spouse, your parenting partner, your bill-paying partner, or the person you coordinate life with.

They are still the person you wanted to do life with.

And sometimes you need to leave your normal environment to remember that.

That is one of the reasons I think travel can be powerful.

It does not replace effort.
It does not replace communication.
It does not fix what people refuse to work on.

But it can soften things.

It can break the routine.

It can remind you that life is not only about surviving the week.

A trip like Punta Cana can give a couple permission to enjoy each other again. To be playful again. To feel romantic again. To have a few days where the biggest decision is where to eat, what to drink, whether to sit by the water, and whether you actually want to do anything at all.

And honestly, that matters.

Because marriage does not only need commitment.

It needs moments.

It needs memories.

It needs laughter.

It needs places where the everyday stress gets quiet enough for two people to find each other again.

That is what Punta Cana reminded me.

A trip may not fix everything.

But sometimes it can remind you what is still worth fighting for.

And sometimes, that reminder starts with sunshine, warm air, good food, and the person next to you.
